Cosmetic Acupuncture in Portland, Maine
Cosmetic Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine
Cosmetic Acupuncture is a gentle and effective alternative to Botox and other injectable therapies. Rooted in traditional Chinese medicine principles, Cosmetic Acupuncture treatments combine traditional knowledge with modern techniques; using precise points on the face, head, and body to stimulate circulation, nourish the skin, and tone underlying facial tissue. With improved blood flow and tissue nourishment, the skin and muscles of the face are supported from within, resulting in a smoother, firmer, and brighter complexion to support graceful aging.
What is Cosmetic Acupuncture?
Also known as an ‘Acupuncture Face Lift’ or Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture, Cosmetic Acupuncture is a holistic treatment that involves the gentle insertion of fine needles around specific points on the face, neck, and scalp to tone facial tissue, activate the body’s natural healing response, improve circulation, and stimulate collagen and elastin production. Collagen is a protein produced naturally by the body that gives skin its structure, firmness, and resilience. As we age, collagen production gradually slows, leading to the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and a loss of elasticity and plumpness (what Chinese medicine refers to as a decline of yin). Supporting collagen synthesis with Cosmetic Acupuncture helps maintain a smooth, radiant complexion and helps lift facial tissue, soften fine lines & wrinkles, reduce puffiness, and enhance overall skin tone, texture, and glow.

What To Expect During Your Cosmetic Acupuncture Treatment
Your first session includes a comprehensive intake outlining health history and skin goals and may include facial and body acupuncture points, jade stone facial gua sha, facial cupping, 30 minutes of Celluma LED light therapy, firming and lifting TCM botanical mask, and arm & hand massage.
Each session is tailored to meet your specific needs and underlying health concerns are thoughtfully integrated into treatment strategy. In Chinese medicine, dermatology addresses skin health holistically through facial and body acupuncture, botanical serum masks, facial cupping & gua sha as well as implementing dietary therapy, and personalized herbal formulas to promote vibrant skin and treat stubborn skin issues. It’s common to take a customized herbal formula alongside Cosmetic Acupuncture and/or Microneedling treatments to further support treatment goals and enhance long-term results.
Post-treatment Care
Following treatment, we recommend avoiding intense exercise, saunas, alcohol, and caffeine for the rest of the day to allow your body to fully integrate the session.
Visible results begin with the first treatment and continue to build with each session. Unlike Botox and fillers, the results of each Cosmetic Acupuncture treatment are cumulative. With regular treatments over time, facial tissues become more firm and toned, and collagen production increases, contributing to a healthier, more radiant complexion. Most significant results typically appear after 8–12 weekly sessions, depending on your age and individual skin type.
Planning & Scheduling
*If you’ve had recent botox or fillers, please wait at least 4 weeks to schedule Cosmetic Acupuncture. See below for a full list of Cosmetic Acupuncture contraindications.
Cosmetic Acupuncture can be performed once or twice per week to stimulate skin regeneration and promote a youthful skin tone and texture. Results continue to build and improve over a series of weekly treatments, depending on the condition of your skin, your skin goals, and age.
We recommend scheduling 12 weekly sessions, with a reassessment after 6-8 sessions. After an initial 12 treatment series, regular maintenance sessions every few months are recommended.
Many clients choose to combine weekly Cosmetic Acupuncture treatments with monthly Microneedling treatments for enhanced results. Microneedling is highly effective at treating fine lines, wrinkles, and overall skin texture, while Cosmetic Acupuncture is excels at targeting facial muscles to help tone, lift, and tighten the skin. Microneedling is typically performed once a month, while Cosmetic Acupuncture can be done weekly. When combined, these treatments enhance one another by accelerating collagen remodeling, improving skin texture & tone, and gently lifting facial tissue. Combining Microneedling and Cosmetic Acupuncture offers a comprehensive approach to holistic skin rejuvenation and skin care.
Celluma LED Red light therapy is used in each Cosmetic Acupuncture & Microneedling treatment to further stimulate the skins natural healing process.

Both microneedling and cosmetic acupuncture improve skin texture, tone, and appearance, however, they work in distinct ways and offer different benefits:
Microneedling uses a device with multiple tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin’s dermis, stimulating collagen and elastin production. It’s especially effective for fine lines, wrinkles, flat acne scars, pores, and balancing complexion.
Cosmetic Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into specific facial and body points to not only boost collagen and enhance circulation, but also to release muscle tension, firm and lift facial musculature, and support overall health.

Most patients find cosmetic acupuncture to be very gentle and relaxing. The needles we use are extremely fine and designed to be used on the face. You may feel a light pinch or dull sensation, but pain is minimal. Many people even fall asleep during their treatment.
-
Bruising is not common, however, minor bruising can occasionally happen, especially around delicate areas like the eyes or mouth. It’s typically minimal and fades within a few days.
*Please avoid scheduling facial acupuncture the days leading up to a major event, as minor redness or bruising can occasionally occur.

There’s little to no downtime after Cosmetic Acupuncture. After your treatment, we suggest taking it easy for the rest of the day. Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, alcohol, and caffeine to give your body the space to fully integrate treatment.
